United Bank of Philadelphia

So Much More Than Banking

Overview

The primary mission of the United Bank of Philadelphia is to deliver excellent customer service at a profit and to make our bank the “hometown” bank of choice. Our goal is to foster community development by providing quality personalized comprehensive banking services to businesses and individuals in the Greater Philadelphia Region, with special sensitivity to Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and women.

United Bank of Philadelphia seeks to drive economic inclusion in urban communities by providing financing to small businesses to help them grow and create/retain jobs with livable wages that improve the economic condition of individuals. These individuals are then able to contribute positively to the local economy and reduce poverty. This is “So Much More Than Banking.”

“Our fundamental goal is to see businesses grow and succeed.” Evelyn Smalls, President & CEO

Philadelphia’s only African-American owned bank was founded in 1992 by Emma C. Chappell who raised $6 million to fund the venture. She started the bank with a focus on improving banking services in historically underserved neighborhoods of Philadelphia. Chappell served as the bank’s chairman of the board, president, and CEO until 2000.
