Who needs a Tax Professional?

image-1-4109.jpgThis question has been asked before, and it is one that is very important: who needs to hire a tax professional? The reason this is important is because so many people do need the help of a professional to get them through the year. You may not be one of them, but at the same time there is a chance that you do fit into this group. As soon as you know whether or not you need a tax professional you can then decide how to plan for the future.

There is one basic group of people who always need a tax professional. They are the ones who do not know anything about how to file their taxes, or any of the details that go along with it. Remember, even if your situation is pretty basic there is still a lot to know. If you are not knowledgeable and have no desire to learn, your only other option is to pay a tax professional for their help. After all, the IRS is not going to let you off the hook just because you are uninformed.

On the other side there are people who have a complex tax situation for a number of reasons ranging from owning a business to having a lot of deductions and everything in between.

You can hire a tax professional anytime you want; you don’t need a special situation or permission from anybody. Most people get the feeling they need to work with a professional when their situation gets too confusing. Instead of fighting the flow, take the time to hire somebody who can take a lot of the work off your plate.

Is your Tax Professional Charging too much?

image-15-32609.jpgDo you get the feeling that your tax professional is charging too much? Do you feel ripped off every time you leave your tax professional’s office? If so, you will want to look into making a change if your concerns are validated. Remember, it does cost some money to get the help of a tax professional. But you don’t want to pay so much that you are getting ripped off.

How will I know if I am being overcharged? Simply put, you need to get quotes from other tax professionals to see where you stand. For instance, if your tax professional charges $500 to file your final return you may feel that this is too much. But until you ask around you will not know for sure. Call a few other professionals in your area and ask them how much they charge for the same service. Soon enough you will know if you are paying too much, or if your tax professional is on par with the rest of the industry.

You never want to pay too much for professional services of any kind. Sure, you are getting something for your money but why would you want to spend more than you have to? This is particularly true when hiring a tax professional because there is so much competition. Not only are there tax franchises, but you can also find individuals, such as CPAs, who have their own business.

The only way to know for sure if your tax professional is charging too much is to get quotes from additional providers. From there, you can quickly determine if you are paying too much or just the right amount.

Do Tax Professionals make Mistakes?

image-9-31709.jpgIt is common for people to think that hiring a tax professional means a mistake free return. This should be the case, but unfortunately, things do not always work out this way. Remember, your tax professional is a human and is prone to making mistakes from time to time. While you hope that they do not make a mistake when dealing with you, it can and will happen.

Even if you do not know a lot about your tax situation you can still check the work of your tax professional. The best way to do this is to stay organized, and to learn as much as you can as you go along. Also, be sure to accurately answer every question that is asked of you. If you don’t do this you are asking for a mistake to be made.

What if I find a mistake as I am reviewing my tax professional’s work? In this case you have the right to tell them what you see. You should not accuse them of a mistake, but instead ask about what you are seeing. If there is an error it can be fixed; even if your return has been submitted to the IRS. It is safe to say that your tax professional will be more than happy to file an amended return if they made a mistake. But remember, they cannot do this unless you bring it to their attention.

In short, tax professionals can and will make mistakes. Even if you trust your help to do everything right you should still double check their work when and where possible. This will help to ensure 100 percent accuracy at all times.
