The Price of Professional Tax Preparation

image-2-6409.jpgOn this blog, I talk a lot about tax professionals, how to hire one, what to look for, when to talk to them, etc. One of the most important details that cannot be overlooked is the price of professional tax preparation. In other words, how much money do you have to pay to have your return completed by a professional? If you are in the process of searching for a tax professional you should definitely look around for the best price.

There are many ways that professionals set their pricing for tax preparation. There is no set rate, so you have to be careful about who you hire. You may be thinking you are getting a great deal until you look around a bit more and find that this is not the case.

How do tax professionals price their services? One of the most common methods is to charge a fee for each form and/or schedule that needs to be completed. This means that the more complicated your return the more money you are going to pay. You will find that some other tax professionals charge an hourly rate. This may work out for you if your tax preparation is not going to take very long.

The most important thing is that you know the price of professional tax preparation and then rely on these basic numbers when searching for somebody to hire. Before you ever decide to visit a professional you should ask them how they charge clients. From there, you can get a ballpark idea of what you will have to pay if you decide to move forward.

Even though professional tax preparation will cost, the service you get is usually worth it.

Tax Planning is a Year Round Task

image-15-42809.jpgGenerally speaking, your final tax return is due on April 15 of every year. For many people this means starting the planning process sometime in the beginning of April. Do you fit into this group? There is no reason that you should be neglecting your tax situation the other 11 months out of the year. If you do, you are putting yourself in a bad position that could cost you when you finally decide to file your final return.

Simply put, tax planning is a year round task that you have to take seriously. If you think this is a joke, or act like you do not have enough time, you are only making things worse on yourself in the long run.

Take for instance somebody who does not properly track their deductions. When it comes time to file they will have to do one of two things: spend a lot of time locating receipts and organizing their situation, or forget about these deductions altogether. Do either one of these options sound intriguing? They shouldn’t. But if you do not plan year round you will find yourself in a situation just like this, or maybe even worse.

Contrary to popular belief, year round tax planning is not as difficult as you may think. Yes, you have to do some administrative work here and there, but this doesn’t mean that everyday will be clogged up with items related to your taxes.

Overall, tax planning is a year round task that you need to take seriously. When you stay on track through all 12 months it becomes much easier to efficiently file your final return before the April 15 deadline.

Free Tax Help is Available for some

image-6-21109.jpgBelieve it or not, you may qualify for free tax help. This is hard for many people to believe, but it is the absolute truth. Of course, you need to know where this free help is coming from and if you qualify. Once you have this information you can decide if you can move forward with free tax help, or if you will need to take care of the filing process on your own. At the very least you should look into whether or not you can get free tax help.

There are many nonprofit organizations all over the country that provide free assistance. For instance, people earning $42k per year or less qualify for free tax help from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, also known as VITA.

How old are you? If you are over the age of 60 you can get all the free tax help you need from Tax Counseling for the Elderly, or TCE. The same holds true if you were in the military. Armed Forces Tax Council offers free tax assistance to military personnel.

As you can see, not everybody will qualify for free tax help. But there is a good chance that you will based on your income, age, or military standing. It costs a lot of money to hire a tax professional so you might as well take advantage of free help if you qualify.

Before you begin to file your return this year be sure to check into one of the many free tax assistance programs that are offered by a variety of organizations. You may be surprised to find out that you qualify.
