Accounting Tips for your One-man Business

image-2-2409.jpgDo you run a one-man business? This could be anything from a freelance writer to an independent sales consultant and much more. If so, you know that your tax situation can get a bit complicated at times. Fortunately, if you know what you are doing from an accounting point of view you can avoid most problems.

Here are three accounting tips to follow:

1. Don’t do it all on your own. There is nothing wrong with taking on some of your tax responsibility. But even then you want to make sure you hand off the proper duties to a tax professional when the time comes. Unless you know exactly what you are doing you should hire help.

2. Stay organized. If you don’t keep everything organized you will be facing a mound of paperwork at tax time. Instead of getting out of whack you should have an accounting system that keeps you on track and organized no matter what time of the year it is. How do you keep track of all your paperwork and related details?

3. Don’t be afraid to learn. When you start your business you may not know much about accounting and how to track your income, expenses, etc. But guess what? As you move forward you should be learning. There is nothing wrong with picking up some information along the way. In fact, you may even want to read a few books so you can really understand what you are doing.

Will these accounting tips help you better manage and organize your one-man business? Hopefully your answer is yes!

A Personal Accounting System for the New Year

image-1-1209.jpgAre you looking for a way to better your financial planning in the new year? This includes everything from your budget to your spending habits to your taxes. If so, you need to implement a personal accounting system that you can trust. Although you may be used to your previous way of doing things a change may be in store.

In today’s world you can turn to technology for almost anything; and this definitely holds true when it comes to your personal accounting system. For instance, have you ever looked into using a system such as Quicken? With this software, or something similar, you can easily control your personal finances. This works out in your favor month to month, as well as over the long term.

It is important to have a quality personal accounting system in place from the start of the new year. The longer you wait the better chance there is that you will get off track and forget about this altogether. In turn, you will find yourself in the same position soon enough and wondering why you are not getting along as well as you should be from a financial point of view.

It does not matter what type of system you use as long as it helps you stay on track. Now is the best time for a new personal accounting system. If you get off to a good start in 2009 you will be able to follow through with this for years to come. Is this the year that you finally take control of your finances? With the right accounting system in place the answer should be yes.

Common Accounting Mishaps

image-4-12508.jpgDo you own a small business? In this case you must be responsible when it comes to your accounting practices. If you make mistakes in this area of your business it will effect your entire operation from top to bottom. And as you can imagine this is not something that is good for your business, and of course, not something that you want to deal with.

Here are three common accounting mishaps that you want to avoid from day one:

1. Disorganization. When you are disorganized you will find it difficult to stay on track. You should have a system in place, no matter what it is, that works to the advantage of your company. It may take some time to settle on a system, but soon enough you will find something that works.

2. Not tracking your income properly. This is a common mistake among one-man businesses. Paying the proper amount of taxes has a lot to do with tracking your income with accuracy. Do you have a system to do this? As you can see, organization is essential as noted in point number one above.

3. As your business grows the chance of making accounting mistakes increases as well. If your business is too big for you to handle on your own you need to hire somebody to help with taxes, common accounting procedures, etc. This may mean more money out of your pocket, but in the long run it will save you time and probably some of cash.

These three common accounting mishaps don’t have to bite you in the neck. Instead, if you know these potential issues are out there you can avoid them in order to keep your small business moving forward with success.
