Is your Tax Refund Missing?
It goes without saying that tax refunds can be delayed for one reason or the next. But if you are expecting a refund it is safe to say that you want your money now, not later. After all, you are owed this money and are probably tired of letting somebody else hold onto it. Fortunately, there are many ways that you can track a missing tax refund. And if things get real bad you can always get in touch with the proper party to request another payment.
The IRS website features a “Where is my Tax Refund?” tool which you may be able to use. The only bad part about this is that this tool only allows you to track refunds for the current year. So if you are searching for a tax refund from a year prior to 2008 you are going to need to get in touch with the IRS.
How long does it take for a tax refund to arrive? If you are expecting your refund in the mail it can take anywhere from two to three months. Those who want their money faster can opt for an electronic deposit. In this case you should receive your payment in less than eight weeks; although this is not guaranteed.
In most cases you are going to receive a tax refund from the IRS within 12 weeks. After this you may want to think about your next step. If you are missing a federal or state return you can get in touch with the IRS. For a local return you should call your local tax collector.
You never want to forget about a missing tax refund. This is money you are owed so you should stick with it until you receive what is coming to you.
