Your Chance of making a Tax Related Mistake

image-13-92408.jpgAre you worried about making a mistake when filing your tax return? Do you want to know the chances of doing so? If so, you are thinking like millions of other Americans. In fact, the majority of people who file their own taxes worry about making a mistake, no matter how big or small. Of course, there are times to worry and times that you should be able to avoid this stress.

The chance of making a mistake is based on many factors. First and foremost, how much experience do you have? If you know what you are doing you will have less of a chance of making a mistake. But if you are filing your own tax return for the first time, you need to be extra careful.

How complicated is your tax situation? If you have a basic return and all of the proper information you will probably find it easy to complete this process. This does not mean that you are immune to mistakes, but it will be much easier for you to stay 100 percent accurate. On the other hand, if your tax situation is more complicated, such as that of a self-employed professional, you will be up against more of a challenge. More complicated tax returns lead to more potential for making an error.

You never want to make a mistake when it comes to your taxes. Any mistake, big or small, could cost you a lot of time and money. The IRS wants your tax return to be perfect, and if you make a mistake in your favor you may get called on it.

Your chance of making a tax related mistake depends on your experience, as well as the complexity of your situation. Where do you stand in these two areas?

Can Hiring a Tax Professional be a Bad Thing?

image-12-92308.jpgTime after time you have probably heard about the benefits of hiring a tax professional. And when it comes down to it, there are many advantages of doing so. But on the other side of things, there are some people who feel that hiring a tax professional can be a bad thing. If you feel this way you should have a very good reason.

Why would hiring a tax professional be a bad thing? Many people do not believe in doing this because they want to learn how to do their own taxes. If this is the case, you are right. The only way that you can learn how to do your own taxes, as well as the details that go into this process, is to move forward on your own.

Others feel that hiring a tax professional is a bad thing because there is no point in spending money if you can do something on your own. In other words, why pay a tax professional to file your final return if you can do it on your own time? This is a legitimate argument. But at the same time you need to look at both sides of the story. Yes, you can save money, but it is not worth it if you make mistakes that will cost you in the long run.

It is not fair to say that hiring a tax professional is a bad thing. But it is easy to see why some people could think this way. If you do not need professional help, good for you. Some people want to learn how to do their own taxes, which will in turn allow them to save a lot of money at least once per year.

What if you can’t pay what you owe the IRS?

image-11-91908.jpgIf you are like most Americans, you keep your fingers crossed that the IRS will owe you a nice, fat refund check upon filing your final return. But does this always happen? Of course not. Every year, millions of disappointed taxpayers learn that they owe the IRS money, not the other way around. In this case, you will be asked to send a check to cover this liability. Do you have the money to do so?

As you can imagine, some people do not have enough money in reserves to send the IRS a check for additional taxes. If you are in this position, you need to know your options. After all, the IRS is not going to let you off the hook. One way or the next they are going to get the money that you owe them in back taxes.

The best thing that you can do is to call the IRS and explain that you do not have the money to pay them in full. This will take some time, but you must do so nonetheless. It is better to communicate with the IRS than to sit back and hope that they forget about you, because that is never going to happen.

Believe it or not, the IRS is not an evil entity. If you cannot afford to pay them in full, they will help you to setup a payment plan. Of course, if you are going this route you will be subject to penalties and fees. And although this is more money that you have to pay out of your pocket, at least you are doing the right thing.

If you can’t pay the IRS what you owe, make sure that you discuss your options with them at once. The longer you delay the more complex and costly your situation is going to become.
