Dubai Continues to Cause Pause for Investors

At the end of last week, the word came out that Dubai World was having debt issues. The result was that financial markets were rocked on Friday. After a weekend to consider the implications, and after the United Arab Emirates has promised to guarantee Dubai banks, it appears that many fears are easing. But not enough. There are still concerns about Dubai, and what could happen going forward. While the stock market isn’t dropping dramatically, it is still modestly in the red.

Also providing a bit of wariness for investors are the results from Black Friday. The Street reports on the issues surrounding the official start to the U.S. holiday shopping season:

Mixed sales results from Black Friday and the first official shopping weekend of the holiday season also gave investors pause on Monday. Although Black Friday’s early morning door busters and all-day discounts effectively brought more shoppers to stores, it couldn’t convince them to forget their budget limitations. According to the National Retail Federation, the average consumer spent nearly 8% less than last year.

Shoppers could also be waiting for more deals. Today marks Cyber Monday, which is characterized by deep online discounts.

Even though sales were slightly higher this year than last year, it appears as though individual spending is down. However, investors may be more cheered if Cyber Monday figures come out more favorably.

In the end, this past weekend has given investors plenty to consider. It will be some time before they sort out their feelings. So, for now, it is only fitting that the stock market show some pause.
