Personal Finance Advice

Home Based Businesses

Home OfficeIf you’re mulling over the idea of starting a home based business then you need to keep a few things in mind:

1.  Keep the expenses low.

2.  Do something you love.

This advice is usually easier said than done because expenses can balloon in the beginning stages of a home based business and sometimes it’s difficult to figure out a way to do something you love while also earning a viable profit.  If you don’t go about it the right way you may wind up in some financial trouble.  In fact, some people find their personal finances turned upside down as a result of a failed home business.

How important is it to open a home based business doing something you love? Consider the difference between these two scenarios:

You start selling makeup through a home based business network because you truly believe in the product and really enjoy doing makeovers and chatting with people.  You don’t mind selling to friends and family, and you enjoy chatting about your business to strangers.

Or

You buy into a home based business selling makeup because you attend someone else’s makeup party and it sounds like a good way to earn some extra money.  You don’t have a particular passion for makeup and you are timid about selling to people who don’t approach you on their own.

Without a passion for the product you’re setting yourself up for failure.  What happens when your home based business fails? You lose whatever money you invested in it and you will have wasted a great deal of time that you could have spent developing a business that would have actually made you happy.

After you find the product you have a passion for, how can you keep your expenses low in the beginning? Although you don’t want to set yourself up for failure, you should still keep in mind that any expenses you have in the very beginning might be for nothing if your business fails.  For this reason, avoid borrowing money to start your business if at all possible.  Since most home based businesses have a relatively low initial fee to begin you’re main goal is to avoid an over-exuberance that might lead to buying up a bunch of stock you don’t need.

Initial stock isn’t the only start-up expense that you may run into.  Don’t forget that you’ll probably need supplies beyond the product you’re selling.  You need a space to work in and supplies like business cards and record-keeping materials to get your business rolling.

The beauty of this is that you may have all the things you need already, or you may be able to get them at a very low cost.  Instead of running out and buying a new desk for your business, use an existing table within your home until you turn a profit.  Instead of buying an expensive pack of 1000 business cards, use one of the companies offering free small packs of business cards for first-time customers like BizCard.  In other words, you shouldn’t take out a second mortgage on your home in order to start a home based business.

Can you make money with a home based business? Absolutely.  There are plenty of people who find their home based business evolve into a profitable venture that allows them to pursue their passion while making some money.  Unless you truly enjoy what you’re doing, however, your chances of augmenting your personal finances with a home based business are slim.
