Free Fun Stuff
If you’re like most people you may have noticed that you just can’t afford to do the things you once enjoyed doing. After all, when money becomes tight the first things to go should be entertainment expenses, so instead of going out to eat you might cook at home or instead of flying to Las Vegas for the weekend you might just choose to stay home. The trick to making these changes as pleasant as possible - without feeling as though you’re living a sparse lifestyle - is to augment them with some new fun activities that are free or nearly free.
You may be surprised to find that there are plenty of great things to do that don’t cost any money at all, or at least that cost very little. When you’re trying to get your personal finances in order and save some cash, trying out some fun free stuff can help you out quite a bit. Try some of these suggestions:
Check out the tourism website for your county or city. You might find all sorts of great stuff to do that doesn’t cost anything at all. If you live in a small city or an obscure county, don’t fret. Chances are there is still a tourism board paid for by your tax dollars.
Do some volunteering. It gives you something to do while also giving you a sense of purpose. It’s unlikely that you’ll run into volunteer opportunities where you’re expected to pay some money in order to become a volunteer. There are so many volunteer opportunities available that you’re bound to find something that replaces an activity you once did when you had a little more money to spend. For example, if you once spent Saturdays at the local zoo, now you can spend Saturday mornings volunteering at the zoo. You still get to see the animals, but you don’t have to pay admission.
Enjoy nature. Take a walk in the park. Do some gardening in your backyard. Pack a picnic and go to the lake. Whatever it is you enjoy doing outside, use it to replace the things you used to pay money to do.
Stay home. This may seem like a foreign concept with the hustle and bustle of today’s society, but there is something to be said for simply staying home when you’re trying to save money. Have a movie night at home, or tackle some projects you’ve been meaning to take care of. Read a book, enjoy a leisurely bubble bath, or figure out how to cook a new dish. Your home can be a great place to enjoy yourself while saving money.
The reason why you should actively look for free activities is simple: You won’t miss the expensive stuff as much if you’ve replaced it all with the free activities. It’s better than lamenting about how there is nothing to do within your budget, and it’s certainly better than charging up activities on your credit card because you don’t have any cash.
