What to do about Credit Card Fees

image-4-5709.jpgThere are many ways that credit card companies make money, and charging fees is one of them. It is important to know what types of fees are associated with your account. Once you know this you can then avoid them at all costs. You don’t want to pay any fees. This is a way for your credit card company to get rich, and for you to harm your financial situation.

To start, you need to review your account so you can become familiar with every type of fee and when it is put into effect. For instance, a late fee is among the most common. You will be slapped with this if you do not send payment on time. These fees usually range from $25 to $50. You can find the exact amount by reading through the terms and conditions of your credit card. When you know about every potential fee you will find it easier to avoid them.

Before you get hit with a fee you can ask your credit card company to void it. Are you tired of paying an annual fee just so you can use a particular credit card? If so, call your provider and ask them to get rid of this before you are charged again. Good customers with a track record of spending a lot and paying on time may get what they want. It is worth asking.

Finally, if you are charged a fee, no matter what type it is, do not be afraid to call your credit card company to negotiate. Even if the fee is legitimate you should still inquiry as to having it removed without paying. Again, it doesn’t hurt to ask.

The best thing you can do with credit card fees is to be aware of them. Knowing which fees are associated with your account will allow you to avoid them at all costs.

Common Credit Card Fees

image-11-12109.jpgCarrying a credit card comes with a lot of responsibility. Before you apply for a card, no matter which one it is, you should find out which fees you may face in the future. Simply put, you don’t want to deal with credit card fees unless it is absolutely necessary. And even then you may want to think twice about what you are doing. Remember, using your credit card and paying interest (in some cases) should be enough for the credit card company. You do not need to be giving them extra money in fees along the way.

The most common type of credit card fee is known as an annual fee. Fortunately, not every card has one of these. Simply put, an annual fee is an amount you pay every year for carrying a particular credit card. Believe it or not, this fee can range from $25 on the low end to $300 on the high end. If you don’t want to pay an annual fee you should not apply for a card that has one. It can be a pain to negotiate your way out of this fee.

What about balance transfer fees? Many people take advantage of balance transfers so they can pay less in interest. But before you do this you need to know that you may be paying a fee for doing so. In most cases, a balance transfer fee is approximately 1 to 3 percent of the amount transferred. For example, if you transfer a balance of $10k with a fee of 1 percent you will owe your credit card company $100.

A few other common credit card fees include: application fee, cash advance fee, late fee, over limit fee, and of course, finance charges.

It is very important to know which fees are associated with your credit card. And if you are applying for a new card be sure to avoid those that have many fees attached to them; they probably aren’t worth your time (or money).

Know the Fees Associated with your Credit Card

image-2-12308.jpgA credit card company is not going to let you borrow money for free. While they may do so at first, which is known as an introductory zero percent rate, this will not last forever. To go along with finance charges there are many other fees you may face. It is very important to know the fees associated with any credit cards that you have in your wallet. To go along with this, if you are applying for a new card you want to consider these fees before you submit your completed application.

Everybody knows that credit cards are associated with interest. For instance, your credit card may have an APR of 10 percent. If you carry over a balance you are going to face a finance charge which will be added to the money you already owe.

Does your credit card have an annual fee? This is a fee that you pay every year for the ability to use your credit card. Most experts agree that you should stay away from credit cards that have an annual fee. One exception is if you have access to a high quality rewards program. In other words, there is nothing wrong with paying a fee if you are receiving a lot in return.

Don’t forget about overdraft or over-limit fees. You need to know the limit of your credit card, and how much you will be charged if you exceed this amount.

Every credit card is going to have certain fees attached to it. As a consumer it is your job to know what fees you could face, when they come about, and how to avoid them.
