When Credit Card Debt goes into Collection
If you have credit card debt and are not paying there is a good chance that it will eventually go into collection. In other words, your credit card company will sell your debt to a collection agency. From there, the agency will use their time and resources to attempt to collect from you. Whether or not you comply is up to you. If things go this far you are already in deeper than you ever wanted to go. That being said, you still have several options for moving forward.
Debt collection agencies are notorious for staying on top of consumers who owe them money. Remember, the only way the agency gets paid is if they collect from you. For this reason, do not be surprised to receive notice after notice in an attempt to collect as soon as possible.
But should I pay a collection agency? Once you know exactly how much money you owe you can decide what step to take next. Most experts agree that you should attempt to settle your debt with the collector. In other words, if you owe $10k you do not want to pay the full amount. Instead, make a “take it or leave it offer” as a way of forcing the collector’s hand. As long as you offer to pay a reasonable amount there is a very good chance that the collection agency will agree. In turn, you end up paying less than what you actually owe.
If your credit card debt goes into collection you can expect your credit score to take a large hit. Even though this is a bad thing, you can recover over time if you settle your position with the collection agency and get back on track with paying your bills when they are due.
