When an Annual Fee is worth it
Do you pay a fee for simply keeping a credit card active? If so, this is known as an annual fee. This is a fee that you pay once per year for keeping your card active, etc. Even though this may sound like a bad idea, and it usually is, there are times when you may want to pay an annual fee in order to get a better deal. Just make sure you are positive that paying this fee is worth the money.
For instance, if paying an annual fee will allow you to get hooked up with a top notch rewards program you may want to take advantage. This is particularly true if you use your card a lot and expect to rack up points throughout the year. In this case, you will first want to make sure that another credit card does not offer a similar program without charging an annual fee. After all, if you don’t have to pay why would you want to?
The actual cost attached to an annual fee depends on the company you are dealing with and the card you are using. Annual fees can range from the $40 range to several hundred or more. As you can imagine, paying an annual fee in the “triple digits” is a big leap. You better be getting something good in return, and making sure that you use your credit card on a regular basis.
There are times when paying an annual fee for the right to use a credit card is a good idea. Make sure you are well aware of how much the fee is, what your card offers, and whether or not you will feel comfortable paying this every year.
