Credit Card Debt Management

Do you need a Higher Credit Limit?

image-2-9408.jpgWhen you apply for a credit card, the company will either approve or decline your application. If approved, your card will be subject to a credit limit that is based on your income, credit history, and credit score. In some cases, you may not receive as large as a credit limit as you may want. If this happens to you, there are a couple of things that you can do.

First off, get in touch with your credit card company and ask them for an increase. In many cases, this is all that it takes in order to get what you want. If you can wait a few months and show them that you will use your card, you have a much better chance of receiving an increase.

If turned down for an increase, there is no need to panic or get upset. Instead, keep this card open but shop around for another. For example, take somebody who wants or needs a credit limit of $10k. If they have one credit card with a limit of $7,500, to reach their goal all that is needed is another with a limit of $2,500. This may not be as easy as carrying one card, but it will allow you to have access to the proper amount of credit.

Of course, before you ask for a higher credit limit you should determine why you are doing this. Ask yourself this question: why do I want a higher credit limit? You may find that this is something that you want, but definitely not something that you need.

All in all, you may need a higher credit limit. If so, try the two options above and see where you end up when everything is said and done.
