Does a Budget help if I am in Debt?

image-6-111109.jpgI am in debt so why do I need a budget? Believe it or not, this is a question that many people ask themselves day after day. They feel that since they are facing a lot of debt that a budget has nothing to offer. Of course, this is not the right way of thinking. No matter what your financial situation a budget can help you better it.

In fact, a budget may be more important to those who are in debt than those who are not. When you are facing debt of any kind you need a plan for getting out. Your budget will tell you how much debt you have, what your monthly payment is, and how long it will take you to find a solution to your problem.

Your budget is only as good as you make it. Some people have the right plan in mind and on paper. This gives them the chance to escape their bad financial situation sooner rather than later.

In addition to helping if you are currently in debt, the right budget can help you avoid making your situation any worse. When you know how much debt you are facing and couple this with your income and other bills, it becomes easier to make the right financial decisions in the future.

As you can see, a budget is something that can help no matter how much debt you are in or what your current situation is. Even if you have no debt, which is unlikely, a budget is still needed. This will allow you to continue down the path of success without stumbling.

Don’t let your Expenses exceed your Income

image-3-9409.jpgWhen it comes to your budget the most important thing to know is that your expenses should never exceed your income. If you make sure that this never happens you will always be in good shape. You may not be able to save a lot of money, but at the very least you will be “above water” at all times. Believe it or not, some people have no clue that this is a bad idea. Instead, they don’t have a budget and hope for the best. As you can imagine, these people are asking for a lot of trouble.

It is easy for your expenses to exceed your income when you don’t have a budget. After all, how are you going to possibly keep track? It is easier than you may think to keep track of this.

To start, write down how much money you bring in every month after taxes. Don’t forget to include all income from you and your spouse, if you have one.

Now, take a close look at your expenses. Tally them up as you go over your budget and write down the total upon completion. If your current expense load is less than your income you are in good shape for now. Hopefully, you have a large enough spread that you can save some money. If you are not as lucky, and your expenses are exceeding your debt, it is time to make some major changes. You cannot comfortably live if your expenses are more than your income. At some point in time this is going to get you in trouble.

Simply put, you should never let your expenses exceed your income. If you do, financial disaster is closing in on you.

Why your Budget isn’t working

image-9-71509.jpgI have a budget but it is not working. This is something that many people face. There is no rule that says your budget has to work in your favor. In fact, some people set a budget and find out soon enough that it is making things worse. If your budget is not getting the job done you need to consider why this is happening.

Here are three reasons why your budget is not working:

1. You are jumping the gun. It takes time to implement a budget, and to see if it is working in the way you had hoped. Take your time. There is a chance that you need to adjust to your new budget before it begins to make things easier on you.

2. The numbers don’t add up. Remember, your budget must be based on your income and expenses. If the numbers don’t add up you are going to face a huge struggle when it comes to making your budget work. As a general rule of thumb, your expenses should not exceed your income.

3. You are straying from the plan. It is one thing to set a budget. But as you probably know from past experience, it is another thing entirely to actually follow it. You definitely need to create a budget, but it will not do you any good if you are straying from the plan.

Is your budget failing for any of the reasons listed above? They are among the most common reasons so your answer may be yes. Fortunately, a broken budget is not one that will always stay this way. You can make changes to better your budget and your experience with it.
