The GM 60-Day Money Back Guarantee

The “Braincenter” Of General Motors, originally uploaded by Derek Farr ( DetroitDerek )

May the Best Car Win,” says Bob Lutz and GM, in reference to their new 60-day guarantee program.

We all like a guarantee. If you purchase a pair of cheap swimming trunks at Wal-Mart, you want that option to bring them back if they split down the middle while bending over to pick up a sea shell. If you purchase a runny batch of coleslaw at your local Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), you want to be able to trot right back in for a refund (or fresh batch).

But how many domestic car manufacturers throughout history have laid out a “no-lemon” guarantee. Not too many I would say. GM is doing just that this month, by telling consumers that at anytime within the first 60 days of purchase, if they are not completely satisfied with their vehicle, they can push, pull, or drag it in for a complete refund. This new GM attitude shows a lot of confidence in their product.

There are of course a couple of rules that must be abide by, such as:

  • Only current GM vehicles (2009-2010) can be included in this offer (Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac)
  • Offer does not include leased vehicles
  • Each vehicle returned cannot have more than a 4,000 miles in accumulation (in other words, no running these into the ground, then dropping them off at the doorstep in expectations of a full pardon)

But, if you play by the rules, this might just be the next best thing to taking back a four-month-old pair of underwear to JCPenney without a receipt, just because they didn’t wear as well as you thought they should.

The program officially starts this coming Monday, September 14th, 2009, and is set to run through November. This will be part of their plan to boost their market shares above their current 19.5 percent. In effect, GM is telling consumers that they are finally putting their money where their mouths have been over previous decades.

Dealers are however realizing that GM may also be putting their money on the line, considering rumors point to a reduction in wholesale discounts by a full half percent, in order to compensate for such advertising. This will put even more pressure upon dealers to sell, when they already have enough problems selling cars as it is!

And thus the saga continues…
