2010 Camaro vs. 1968 Camaro: The Legendary Race

There is no doubt going to be some interesting road play going on for the next few months as people try to get a feel for exactly what can the 2010 V-8 Camaro can do. In case you haven’t been privy to the legendary race of a 2010 SS/RS Camaro against the 1968 SS/RS pasted all over the Internet, you might want to take a look at it before these folks are arrested and pulled off of YouTube. Well, not really, but it could happen!
Here is a tip for you folks, if you are going to post a cool video like this on YouTube displaying a blatant breaking of several U.S. traffic laws… you might want to make sure it is not spread around to such magnitude. I wouldn’t be surprised if President Obama himself hasn’t seen this… it being his car company now and all!
But anyway, let’s get back to the race at hand. For those of you who know your vehicles, you would guess right off the bat that the 1968 Camaro SS featured on this video is not in stock form. If it was, the race would not have been near as close. That particular 68′ has a 406 cubic-inch small block and 3:73:1 rear end. Stock form would have been a 350 cubic-inch (5.7 liters) with around 295 horsepower and a 0-60 of around 8 seconds flat.
Let’s see, match that up with the 2010 Camaro SS with its 6.2 liter V-8, 426 horsepower, and 0-60 in about 5-seconds flat, and as you can see it would be no contest. The Camaro V-6 would be a slightly closer match-up with its 3.5 liter V-6 delivering 300 horsepower and a 0-60 launch of around 6-seconds, but it would still most likely take it by a margin.
But let’s be frank here… we are comparing apples to oranges. 1968 was more than just a few generations ago. That would be like a 24-year-old racing their 64 year-old grandma around the block. 40 years is a big difference when it comes to technology and innovation. Win or lose, the 1968 still gets mucho respect for the legend that it is!
