Theft is on the Rise… Protect Yourself!
When a nation is recessionally challenge (politically correct for ’screwed’), one result of such a predicament can be a slight rise in theft (gas, vehicle, personal belongings, etc.). While some may disagree with this claim, it is never a bad idea to reduce your chance of becoming any statistic. Here are some ideas to keep yourself and what’s yours safe this summer.
-
Buy a locking gas cap- Yeah, you’ve been hearing this a lot lately and it is certainly a good idea. Siphoning gas from a parked car has a common theft today. You should inquire about a locking cap anytime you buy a new car.
-
Park in a locked garage- A lot of folks these days use their garage for storage, but you are putting your vehicle in risk as a potential target anytime it sits outside overnight. Even if you have a locking gas cap, gas prices have made some people desperate that they will stop at nothing to get to your gas. There have been a few reports of thief’s drilling through gas tanks in order to drain a gas tank.
-
Roll those windows all the way up- It is hot out this summer. But you will be even more hot if you are sitting out on the curb waiting to report your stolen vehicle to your local sheriff’s office. Newer cars are not bullet proof when it comes to having their locks picked, but it becomes even easier if you leave your interior wide open to prying tools.
-
Use a steering wheel locking device- You would be surprised how well a steering wheel locking device deters theft and it only takes a minute to install and uninstall.
-
Keep all trace of personal belongings out of sight- Many thief’s scan through cars to see if there is something worth steeling before they go to the trouble of trying to get into your vehicle. Take away any and all temptation.
-
Consider having your VIN number etched if you have a high risk car- This creates a hassle for the thief who is looking to replace your vehicle VIN with a fake for a quick resale. Now they’ll have to replace all of the windows too.
