“Green” 1, Hummer 0…

Green over takes mean, as the Hummer become an extinct breed!

Well, its not just the Hummer of course. It is the whole lot of lumbering pickup trucks and SUV’s that are slowly but surely being squeezed out of dealership lots. That is if they can even give these things away.

It turns out that a lot of dealers are complaining that even at a third off the price of some of these high priced gas guzzlers… such as $17,000 instead of upwards of $50,000, consumers are still turning their noses up at these vehicles.

But who can blame them. At $100 per fill-up, one third off the price doesn’t quite add up to much savings these days. With all of these behemoth hunks of metal collecting dust in the lots, manufacturers are suffering a lack of sales which has a few of them contemplating some major changes in the coming year.

GM has closed four plants with the intension of switching their concentrations towards fuel economical and emission clean vehicles according GM chairman, Rick Wagoner. They plan on shifting away from big pickup trucks and SUV’s, and are considering even selling the Hummer brand. Kind of like mice scurrying towards the top of a ship before it plummets into oblivion.

Gas prices are hitting the big vehicle companies hard and they are having to make some very quick decisions. Within three years, GM production should have successfully dropped 500,000 of these big gas guzzlers per year in favor of more compact, economical passenger vehicles.

While 500,000 units may sound like a lot, GM is only planning on dropping about 10% of its current 50% stock pile of SUV/Trucks, so for those of you who love your big vehicles, there will still be a couple out there for you to chose from.

They will probably not have the massive V-8’s they once did, but instead an “ecotech” V-6 with similar horsepower and performance. Kind of makes you wonder what kind of response the upcoming V8 400 horsepower Chevrolet Camaro is going to get at the close of the year.

All this change probably has GM reconsidering the 4-cylinder turbo Camaro again! Or even worse, not having the Camaro at all!

Enjoy those muscle cars and big SUV’s now while you can folks… they are most certainly a dying breed…
