Highlights of the New York Auto Show: Pontiac G8 GT (Sport Truck)
So what is the purpose of such a creation you may ask?
Well, it can haul a plastic palm tree from JC Penny to the nearest stoplight in less that 6 seconds. The tree may not still be in the G8 anymore by the time you get there, but it could be done.
Do you want to race or do you want to haul stuff?
Perhaps this is for those people who are quite sure yet, and if this sounds like you, then prepare to be dazzled!

The 2010 Pontiac G8 GT, as it has been temporarily dubbed until a better name comes around (we all hope so), is basically a G8 Sedan with the rear passenger seats and trunk chopped open. In other words a two-seater with a truck bed. A bit of length has been added to the G8 GT to give the bed a full 74 inches of cargo space.
Although we are dealing with basically a car frame, Pontiac gave the GT enough rear suspension upgrades to boost its overall load capacity to around ½ ton. It will also be able to tow up to 3,500 lbs, which means that it will definitely be able to get some of your dirty work done if the need should call.
For those of you who can remember back beyond 1987, may remember a few similar vehicles under the guise of the El Camino by Chevrolet…

The Sprint by GMC, and the Ranchero by Ford. These cars enjoyed some popularity for almost three decades until it became clear that the actual trucks were outselling them, so they were discontinued.
Well, It looks like they may be back thanks to the recent rise in performance enthusiasts requesting sports car performance in their trucks. Have you noticed how trucks have been getting more sporty? Well Pontiac decided to one up the rest and throw out a sports car with a truck bed. Try to beat 0-60 in 5.4 seconds… and that’s with the bed uncovered.
The G8 Sports Truck will receive the same Pontiac G8 Sedan 6.0 liter V-8 packing 361 horsepower and 385 lbs of torque. If that’s not enough to get that plastic JC Penny tree going, there is talk that you may also have the option of a 6.2 liter V-8 from the GXP in 2011 that will bump you up to 402 horsepower!
The interior will not change much from the G8 sedan, which should please most sport enthusiast truck buyers…

But is there really going to be a place in the hearts of buyers for this scandalous love affair between a truck and sports car?
We shall see…
