6 Months to the New 2008 Dodge Challenger
At SEMA 2007 this year, we learned a bit more about the new 2008 Dodge Challenger that should start production this April to be available in May/June.
It has been over 20 years since we saw the Challenger (early 80’s)… and for those who are unlucky enough to only have memories of these crimes against paved black top, you are going to be in for a treat.

1980 Dodge Challenger
The 1980 Dodge Challenger was more along the lines of a early Mitsubishi, with a 2.3 liter 4 cylinder power plant and a subcompact base design that would have been enough to have embarrassed Barney the Purple Dinosaur.

1970 Dodge Challenger
The new Dodge Challenger Concept is designed after the original in looks and performance both. There is talk of a super high performance 6.4 liter high output version (as if the base model won’t be enough performance for most) and a convertible, but we will have to wait for 2009 to get our hands on one of these.

2008 Dodge Challenger
The first Challengers are going to be SRT-8 models with automatic transmissions, the classic HEMI Orange exterior with hood stripes, and a 6.1-liter V-8 engine, produced in March or April as 2008 models.
The features and options on the 2008 Dodge Challenger is expected to be very similar to the 2008 Charger. We are talking a functional hood scoop, chrome filler doors, six-speed manual TREMEC transmissions, and wheel sizes from 17″ to 20″. There will most likely not be any spare tire for weight savings and instead “no run-flats†and a tire service kit.
For those of you who prefer a little more economy and gas savings, in 2009, there has also been talk of a 6-cylinder option, featuring most likely the 3.5 liter SXT to be replaced in 2011 with the 4.0 liter Phoenix engine.
The new Dodge Challenger has big plans for itself, and just in time to squash some of the thunder that Chevrolet was hoping for with the release of their new Camaro in 2009!
