Most everyone has come to know the The Bugatti Veyron as the current fastest street legal car in the world. Yes, it does have a record top speed of 254 mph, but fastest street legal car it is not. It could not even be considered to the fastest ‘production’ car anymore. But it is the original, it is a beautiful looking car, and for around $850,000 one could be all yours. But enough about the Bugatti… let’s get into a few of the lesser known dogs.

Currently the fastest ‘production’ sports car according to Guinness Records is the The SSC Ultimate Aero TT (TT- stands for two beautifully crafted twin turbo’s) With 1183-hp and 1094 ft-lbs of torque, the SCC Aero ran a record top speed of 256.19 mph, giving it the official title as fastest street legal production car in the world. The Aero’s top speed is said to be more like 273 mph, so perhaps a bug was stuck on the windshield and blew the whole aerodynamics thing.

Those in the auto trend industry take the word fastest very seriously, so when speaking about the Ultima GTR720, it is important to point out that technically it is not faster than the Bugatti Veyron if you consider top speed as your main factor. But if you were to run it down a block next to the Bugatti, the GTR would most likely scorch the Bugatti with its lightning fast 2.6 seconds from 0-60. The GTR actually comes in two versions… the 640bhp engine, termed the Ultima GTR640 and the 720bhp engine, termed the Ultima GTR720. Why anyone would ever take second best here when you were spending the mortgage on two homes we may never know, but never-the-less the choice is there!

You can’t create a list of the fastest street legal production cars without at least the mention of the Saleen S7. With the choice of 1035 bhp or 850 bhp, one has to wonder if the question is really, do you want to be pancake flat upon impact or more along the lines of paper thin. Having a staunch GT-1 history in the history of the American Le Mans series, you really can’t go wrong here. Take it from one of the proud owners of this legendary cars, funny man Jim Carey, this car is no laughing matter with top speeds up to 160 mph.

And not to leave the standard domestics out of the running, the Ford RS200 can roll from 0-60 in a very respectable 2.8 seconds, putting it in at least the top 10 category.

But in all honesty, the truly fastest street legal cars are those built up in little garages all over the world by dedicated folks who have the dream of owning the ultimate car without an unreachable ultimate price tag. Who are these folks? Well, they are just like this fellow and his Red Victor One, capable of 0-60 in 1 second… Amen!
